I/01 History and Introduction to the World Trading System

Prof. Thomas Cottier, World Trade Institute, University of Bern
Prof. Krista Nadakavukaren Schefer, University of Basel

The first course of the MILE Programme provides you with a basic understanding of the evolution and functioning of the world trading system and prepares you for further studies.

In this course you'll learn how the current system of international trade came into place and get introduced to the law and policy of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). First, a review of historical developments will guide us in discussing the institutional setup of the WTO. Then we will follow up by examining some of the basic principles and rules of the international trading system. By the end of the week you'll be ready to explore further studies in international trade.

We welcome interested individuals as weekly students in this course. As a weekly student you do not need any knowledge of the field to participate. The price of signing up to this course as a weekly student is CHF 1'500.

In order to participate in this course, join our MILE Programme or sign up as a weekly student. Contact us if you require more information and we will gladly be of assistance.
