Microeconomics

This course introduces MILE students to the very basics of microeconomics. Special regard is given to those students without any prior exposure to the study of economics. As our principal reference we adopt the widely acclaimed textbook by Mankiw and Taylor, which will occasionally be integrated with handouts distributed during the lectures. The course is organised in a manner to provide ample opportunity for in-class exercises around the lectures, and a final tutorial will be entirely devoted to making students feel fully at ease with sitting the mid-term exam.

Macroeconomics

This is an introductory course in macroeconomics. Students who have not had any prior exposure to macroeconomics should be able to complete it successfully. The course carefully (i) introduces students to important macroeconomic issues and (ii) develops the basic tools used for macroeconomic analysis. The topics covered include, among others, the measurement of economic activity; the forces behind recessions and booms; fiscal and monetary policy in closed and open economies; exchange rates and global imbalances; the forces behind long-run economic development. The course will further include discussions of the 2008-09 global economic crisis. By the end of the course, students should be able to follow the discussions of macroeconomic issues in, for example, The Economist, the Wall Street Journal, or the Financial Times.

Semester long courses in law, economics and global political economy are not open to the public.
