Future challenges of international law: The way forward in patenting biotechnology

Symposium organised by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the University of Bern and the World Trade Institute.

The World Intellectual Property (WIPO), in cooperation with the University of Berne and the World Trade Institute (WTI), will host a Symposium on Future Challenges of International Law: The Way Forward in Patenting Biotechnology at its headquarters in Geneva on November 25, 2009.

The Symposium will address the challenging interface between biotechnology, intellectual property rights (IPRs) and international trade, and will explore options for the international patent system after the WTO Doha Round.

The team of the NCCR International Trade’s Project on Biotechnology (www.nccr-trade.org<//font>) will present the outcome resulting from its research conducted during the past four years. The program covers case studies on animal genetic resources and human genetic resources as well as future challenges regarding the international regulation of IPRs and biotechnology from the WIPO and WTO perspectives.

The Symposium will offer an opportunity for an informal exchange of views and experience with the audience. The event is open to the general public and free of charge.
