Beketov Sergiy - Ukraine Print
Sergiy Beketov worked in the Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice for 2.5 years, mainly focusing on international investment arbitration. His main function was to supervise representation of the State of Ukraine in state-investor arbitration cases under the auspices of such international organizations as ICSID (USA), ICC (France), LCIA (UK), SCC (Sweden), CIArb (Egypt) etc. His duties included drafting and reviewing procedural documents (request for arbitration, memorials, replies etc), working with witnesses to produce witness statements, and participating in oral hearings before arbitral tribunals.
Sergiy holds two masters degrees in law: one from the National “Yaroslav the Wise” Law Academy (Kharkov, Ukraine), the leading law school in the CIS; the other an LL.M from the University of Tilburg (Netherlands), one of the leading law schools in Europe. Sergiy has also participated in numerous short-term programs.  These include a summer school on the European system of human rights (Viadrina Universität, Germany); a program on European and German law in the context of legal cooperation between the Karl-Eberhard University and the National “Yaroslav the Wise” Law Academy; and the national round in the Telders International Law Moot Court Competition.
Sergiy’s practical experience, apart from civil service, also includes close practical cooperation with the leading Ukrainian law company, Magisters (where he mainly focused on international investment arbitration), and an internship with the Dutch law company Conway & Partners (with main specialization in international construction arbitration).
Sergiy’s main goal in joining the MILE program is to foster skills on understanding WTO substantive and procedural law as well as complex case law on international trade. This expertise would later allow him to advise either private parties or the State of Ukraine on various international trade-related issues within the legal framework of the WTO.
Sergiy is fluent in Russian, Ukrainian and English in addition to having an advanced knowledge of German and a basic knowledge of Spanish. He enjoys travel, photography and listening to a great variety of music.
