Tuition Fee Tuition for the MILE Programme is 30,000 CHF for the year. There are some scholarships and financial aid available. For more information, please see the link on Financial Aid.
Selection Process The WTI accepts up to 50 applicants a year. The principal criterion for admissions is a sound academic and/or professional background in a discipline relating to the MILE program, preferably law, economics or international relations (either undergraduate degree plus some professional experience or completed Master studies or similar). The selection process is non-discriminatory as to country of origin, nationality, gender and age. We shall, however, seek to include students from developing and transitional countries, possibly with scholarships provided by donor organizations. We shall also seek a good mix of different professional and academic backgrounds.
The Application The application package consists of the application form, two letters of recommendation, academic certificates in English, a curriculum vitae, a Statement of Purpose and a Personal Statement, where applicants should take particular care in outlining and discussing their reasons for wanting to pursue graduate work at the WTI. A personal interview can be part of the evaluation process. Applicants must submit English-language transcripts from each college or university attended showing their academic records as well as degrees earned and the dates these were awarded. A supplement explaining the grading system must accompany the transcript. Current students or recent graduates should submit letters of recommendations from two teachers. Applicants who have completed their degree more than three years ago should submit a letter from a current or former employer. Letters from family members, friends, or persons who are not well acquainted with the applicant should not be submitted.
Language Requirements for MILE The MILE Programme is taught exclusively in English. Furthermore English is the lingua franca of an international student cohort of both native and non-native English speakers representing on average more than 30 countries. Accordingly, students need to arrive with a level of English which allows them to benefit from the programme by expressing themselves effectively in and outside the classroom and in the weekly writing assignments. Furthermore, students will need to adequately cover a weekly reading load of approximately 200 pages.
The ability to write and speak well in English is integral to success on the MILE Programme. During your intensive year with us, you will be called upon to demonstrate your competence and acquisition of knowledge by exhibiting clarity in writing essays, policy papers, legal memos and other written assignments as well as communicating effectively with professors and fellow students in the classroom. Time constraints do not allow the WTI to provide an in-house language foundation course prior to commencement of the MILE. However, all students will be requested to write a diagnostic essay in the first teaching week and have the opportunity to improve during the semester by attending weekly academic writing sessions.
Evidence When evaluating your application, the selection committee pays close attention to evidence of your English competencies. As is the case with all leading graduate programmes, submission of objective test scores such as the TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge proficiency or equivalent is required of all applicants who are not native English speakers (see below for list of exemptions). The following table provides the minimum requirements for accepted tests. Preference will be given to applicants with higher scores:
The following applicants are exempt from submitting test scores:
- Students with an undergraduate and/or graduate degree from an institution in which English is the primary language of instruction
- Students who have completed at least one year of study in an English speaking country where the primary language of instruction is English (provided the year of study occurs immediately prior to coming to Berne).
- Students with a university degree major in the English Language (BA in English).
A high test score does not necessarily reflect all capabilities and does not guarantee success in the programme but it is one of the factors evaluated in the admissions process. Telephone interviews and examples of legal and/or academic writing may be requested of any applicant at the discretion of the selection committee after assessment of the application.
Reactivation of a Previous Application The Office of Admissions retains applications for one year only. If you have previously applied to the MILE Programme, you may reactivate your application by submitting additional documents to supplement those already in our files. Scholarships granted in one year cannot be deferred to future years.
Full and Part-time Study The WTI offers both a full and part-time program of study for MILE students. International students with visa restrictions must enroll on a full-time basis. Part-time students are expected to complete the degree within two years.
Deadline - 15 March Applications must be received by the new deadline by 15 March of the year in which you wish to start the program. Applications submitted thereafter can be considered only if places on the Program are still available.
