An International Investment Court System? Dissecting the European Union Proposal

A WEF/WTI Investment Roundtable

The World Economic Forum and the World Trade Institute at the University of Bern, are delighted to be hosting at the World Economic Forum’s headquarters in Cologny, Geneva this Wednesday 25 May a WEF/WTI investment roundtable, focusing on frontier issues on investment governance, and especially on the proposal for an International Investment Court system.

The EU's quest to establish a global investment court and appeals procedure, which was given a significant measure of political and substantive support in the recently revised CETA, represents without doubt one of the most important advances in global economic governance, notably in the context of negotiations towards a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, as well as the hurdles it anticipates in this regard. Bringing together several of the world's leading experts in the trade and investment field drawn from all key stakeholder communities including policymakers, practitioners and arbitrators, academics, civil society and business, and the investment policy heads of relevant international organisations on the issue, our one-day event will explore prospects for, and against, advancing the EU's proposed Investment Court System, as well as some of the political economy challenges likely to be encountered in reforming the investor-State dispute settlement mechanism, as the idea of revived multilateralism in investment governance gathers momentum.
