Adopting an Intersectional Lens to Climate Governance

The University of Bern will host a one-day workshop on 14 October 2016 to explore the relevance of the concept of intersectionality to climate governance.

Motivation

Since 1989, the concept of intersectionality has enabled the study of the consequences of overlapping factors of discrimination. A growing body of research seeks to explore the practical implications of intersectionality to a diverse range of policy areas. However, and while gender issues have been increasing integrated to sustainable development and climate research, research exploring the role of intersectionality in the context of climate change and climate governance remains limited. Under the current status quo, sources of discrimination or marginalisation tend to be addressed by international processes in isolation from one another.

Ongoing international developments offer opportunities to consider how intersectionality could inform climate governance, in particular with the preparation of a general recommendation by the CEDAW Committee on gender-related dimensions of climate change and the extension of the UNFCCC Lima Work Programme on Gender.

Format

The workshop will gather about 30 participants from a broad range of backgrounds, including researchers, civil society representatives, national civil servants and staff members of relevant intergovernmental organisations. The objective of the workshop is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge among the participants. To enable frank and open discussions, the workshop will take place under Chatham House rules.

The morning session of the workshop will begin with a keynote speech by Annica Kronsell followed by a first panel dedicated to practical experiences with mainstreaming intersectionality in climate action. The afternoon session will consider how intersectionality can inform research related to climate action and governance. This panel will be followed by presentations from various intergovernmental processes regarding their ongoing work on related matters.

Additionally, several outreach initiatives will be undertaken in order to share key aspects of these discussions and to reach out to different types of key audiences.
