Reflections on the Future of the Rules-Based Trading System
The World Trade Institute is pleased to note that Professor Dr. Isabelle Van Damme, Deputy Managing Director and Director of Academic Studies at the World Trade Institute, delivered the 2025 Kronstein Lecture at the University of Lucerne Faculty of Law on “The reshaping of the rules-based trading system – challenges for Europe and the United States.”
In her lecture, Professor Van Damme explored how the international trading system is being reshaped by profound geopolitical and economic shifts. She reflected on the evolving role of the United States and the European Union, and the growing influence of emerging powers in the Global South and East.
Drawing on her academic and professional experience, Professor Van Damme emphasized that while the rules-based multilateral system faces unprecedented pressures, its preservation remains essential. Reform, she suggested, must be grounded in the rule of law, shared responsibility, and renewed cooperation among nations.
Her remarks highlighted a cautiously optimistic view of the future — one in which the multilateral system adapts, becomes more inclusive, and continues to provide a framework for stability and trust in global trade.
The World Trade Institute highlights this importance of this ongoing debate on the future of the international trading system -- and thanks Professor Van Damme for this important contribution.
