Final stop: Ecuador!

After two weeks of activities in Peru and Colombia, Prof. Peter Van den Bossche, the WTI Director of Studies, completed last week his lecturing and conference tour in South America, with three lectures and numerous meetings in Ecuador.

On Monday, 17 July 2023, Prof. Van den Bossche gave a lecture on “International Trade and the Climate Crisis” at the Colegio de Jurisprudencia of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ). At USFQ, he was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Farith Simon, Dean of the Colegio, and Prof. Hugo Cahueñas.

On Tuesday, 18 July 2023, he participated in a conference on “International Law, Sustainable Development and Climate Change” at the Universidad de las Americas (UDLA) in Quito, organized by Prof. Dr. Alvaro Galindo, Dean of the Law Faculty, and moderated by Prof. Dr. Sébastian Espinosa. At the well-attended conference, Van den Bossche gave a lecture on “International Law Principles and Trade-Related Climate Measures”. Prof. Gonzalo Mendieta Dueñas, Rector of UDLA, and Van den Bossche signed a Memorandum of Understanding between UDLA and WTI on future cooperation.

On Wednesday, 19 July 2023, Van den Bossche gave a lecture on “The Crisis of the Multilateral Trading System and the World Trade Organization” at the Universidad Andina Simon Bolivar (UASB) in Quito, in the context of the course on International Business Law of Prof. Michel Levi Coral, the WTO Chair holder in Ecuador. This lecture was transmitted to the UASB partners of the universities in Cuenca (Universidad del Azuay) and Ibarra (PUCE Sede Ibarra). In his capacity of member of the Academic Board of the WTO Chairs Programme, Van den Bossche also met with the WTO Chair team at UASB to discuss their future research and outreach projects.

Finally, on Thursday, 20 July, Van den Bossche met with Amb. Alejandro Suárez, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Ecuador, to discuss future cooperation between the Academy and the WTI.
