In Loving Memory of Nathalie Diaz

The untimely demise of Nathalie Diaz, MILE 14 alumna from Peru and a beloved member of the WTI family has left us shocked and deeply saddened. Our hearts go out to her family and friends in these difficult times. The eulogy below was written by Nathalie's friends and fellow WTI alumnas Kholofelo Kugler, Karla Solis and Sainabou Taal.

Parting is such sweet sorrow – William Shakespeare

On 28 November 2020, we lost our dear and beloved friend Nathalie Diaz. Those who walked the last few miles with her will know that Nathalie fought with dignity, tremendous inner strength, and courage. Nathalie never wanted to cause worry or concern. Instead, selflessly gave of herself, her time, and her love.

Nathalie’s passing leaves us a gaping hole in our hearts. She was a wise, warm, and kind soul, who never had a harsh word for anyone. Her radiant smile would brighten any room and everyone around her. As a friend, she was the gold standard: fiercely loyal, caring, honest, and ready to make you see the silver lining behind every dark cloud.

Nathalie's journey in Switzerland started in 2013 as a MILE 14 student. Nathalie was extremely diligent and generously shared her far superior knowledge and experience with anybody who asked her. Soon thereafter, she met the love of her life Joel Reeves and started her dream job at the WTO in 2016. Nathalie was a valuable staff member of the Rules Division of the WTO. She worked with passion, dedication, and integrity.

The world has lost a talented and devoted international trade lawyer and we have lost the sweetest of friends. Although she left us far too soon, we are thankful for the time we spent together.

We wish Joel and her family strength and comfort during this difficult time.
