Inauguration of the 7th WTI-CWS Joint Academy on International Trade Law and Policy

On 7 June 2021, the Inauguration of the WTI-CWS Joint Academy took place with a welcome address by Prof. Abhijit Das, Head of the Centre for WTO Studies and Prof. Manfred Elsig, Deputy Managing Director of the World Trade Institute.

The first week of the Academy started with lectures by Prof. Denise Prévost from Maastricht University as part of the course 'Essentials of WTO Law and Policy' and a speech by the Commerce Secretary of the Government of India, Dr Anup Wadhawan.

This year, more than 20 participants from 16 Indian law schools and a number of practitioners are enrolled in the Joint Academy. The WTI is proud that since 2014 the 4-week WTI-CWS Joint Academy on International Trade Law and Policy has been organised annually together with the Centre for WTO Studies of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (except in 2020 due to COVID). So far, more than 150 Indian law students have been trained in the past years. The WTI is happy to continue our longstanding cooperation with the Centre for WTO Studies. For the first time the Academy is organised in an online format.

Despite this fact, the course structure remains the same, as courses are taught by international faculty members of the WTI and faculty members from various Indian institutions. The joint teaching by Indian and international faculty members gives the students a good introduction and exposure by leading experts in the field.
