We are looking for a motivated, diligent student to assist in research activities starting on 1 March 2023 (or at the earliest possible date). We welcome applications from master or doctoral students in economics, political science, sociology and related fields.

Research Assistant at the World Trade Institute, University of Bern

The research assistant will join a team conducting research on the governance systems that have been created to monitor and improve labor standards in global supply chains. The collaborative research project “Labor Standards Compliance and Buyer-Supplier Linkages in Global Supply Chains” is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and led by Dr. Damian Raess (WTI) and Prof. Matthew Amengual (University of Oxford).

Tasks

The research assistant is expected to fulfill a range of tasks pertaining primarily to the preparation, manipulation and analysis of large sets of data on firm characteristics, trade networks, social audits and institutional features of countries. Ability to use applied econometric methods and/or knowledge of the Orbis dataset and fuzzy matching are desirable skills for this position.

Requirements

We welcome applications from master or doctoral students in economics, political science, sociology and related fields. The working language will be English. Students should have a valid working permit from a Swiss University (if non-Swiss citizens). Competence in quantitative methods including knowledge of statistical software (Stata and/or R) is essential.

We offer

The position is based at the World Trade Institute and is offered on a part time basis (25% or higher/lower upon agreement). There is flexibility as to how the working hours are distributed within the week. The position is available for a period of up to seven months.
