Contreras, Julieta

PhD student in Political Science

Julieta Contreras is a PhD candidate at the World Trade Institute (WTI) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Manfred Elsig. Her research interests are at the intersection of international trade, political science, and data science, applying innovations in machine learning and text analysis to understand the complex relationships between trade negotiations, policy enforcement, non-trade issues in trade agreements, and the evolution of global value chains. She is part of the Swiss National Science Foundation–funded project DESTA 3.0.

Before joining the WTI, as a statistician at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC, Julieta contributed to analyses on tariffs and trade agreements, including the USMCA review. Previously, she has worked at the World Trade Organization on improving global trade forecasts using machine learning techniques, and at the Bank for International Settlements and Bank of Mexico, where she worked on real sector forecasts and research on banking and international finance.

Julieta holds a master’s degree in International Economics from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey and a Certificate in Public Policy from the University of British Columbia.
