Associate Professor Mattia Fochesato
Mattia Fochesato is an economic historian and tenured Associate Professor at the Department of Social and Political Sciences, Bocconi University. He holds a PhD in Economics and his research focuses on the long-run determinants of income and wealth distribution across world regions, combining economic theory with quantitative historical and archaeological evidence.
Before joining Bocconi University, where he served as Assistant Professor from 2019 to 2025, he held academic positions at the University of Basel as Max Geldner Assistant Professor and at NYU Abu Dhabi and Sciences Po Paris as a postdoctoral researcher.
His work has been published in leading international journals in economics, economic history, and the natural sciences, including the Journal of Economic Literature, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Economic History Review, Explorations in Economic History, Nature, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
He is currently working on projects on the long-run global history of wealth inequality, with a particular focus on the technological and institutional drivers of wealth distribution in ancient societies.
