International Workshop: Regional Approaches in Migration/Asylum Governance: Advancing the International Agenda

The 12th event in the NCCR Trade Regulation Global Series, the workshop is organised by Work Package 4 leader Sandra Lavenex.

Regional institutions occupy an important space in recent UN initiatives to boost global cooperation on migration and refugees. In the absence of strong multilateral governance, regional initiatives addressing mobility, asylum or migration control have proliferated all over the world. Unlike Europe, where these different aspects of migration policy have over time been addressed by one institution, the European Union, regional initiatives in other parts of the world tend to emerge in different fora, with overlapping but incongruent memberships such as regional integration frameworks, human rights regimes, Regional Consultation Processes (RCPs) or ad-hoc intergovernmental negotiations. This workshop investigates the different layers and structures of migration governance in different world regions. It thereby follows two aims:

  • improving our understanding of the different structures of migration governance within regions and across regions and
  • developing conceptual tools for a comparative analysis of regional migration governance.
