International Economic Law and National Policies to Address Climate Change?

This guest lecture by Dr. Ilaria Espa took place in the context of the course on International Economic Law and the Pursuit of Core Societal Values.

Dr. Ilaria Espa is Assistant Professor of International Economic Law at USI, Senior Research Fellow at the WTI, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Milan.

Abstract

This lecture aims at giving a solid understanding of the new features of national policies implemented by States for climate change-related purposes with a focus on the renewable energy sector. It will shed light on the main controversial aspects of these policies from a WTO law perspective. It will accordingly examine the main outcomes of renewable energy-related disputes at the WTO and discuss whether WTO case law has succeeded in achieving a fine balance between trade liberalization concerns and climate change mitigation concerns.
