Brief description of the seminar:
In the presentation, he will outline the revised foreign economic strategy released by the Federal Council in November last year and demonstrate how the objectives of this strategy are being addressed in the WTO and FTAs, in a challenging political context for multilateralism in general and international trade in particular. A special focus will lie on the contribution trade policy can make toward sustainable development.

About the Speaker:
Ambassador Markus Schlagenhof (*1965), lic.rer.publ. HSG, LL.M., Delegate of the Federal Council for Trade Agreements and head of the World Trade Division in the Foreign Economic Affairs Directorate since 1st September 2016. Previously, head of the WTO unit of the World Trade Division. From 2008 to 2012, head of the International Movement of Goods unit of the Special Foreign Economic Service Division, where he served as deputy head from 2006. In 2001, he was seconded to the Embassy of Switzerland in London as deputy head of the business section. From 1998 to 2001, deputy head of the Technical Barriers to Trade unit. In 1995, he joined the former Federal Office for Foreign Economic Affairs (FOFEA) and worked as an associate researcher in the WTO unit.

About the seminar series:
These courses consists of a number of stand-alone seminars on different aspects of global economic governance. These 2- or 3-hour seminars are taught by leading experts in the field. The purpose of the seminars is to allow students to benefit from the insights and personal experience of the experts invited, and to engage in discussions with the experts as well as among themselves on the aspects of global economic governance addressed.

* For current MILE and TRAIL+ students, attending the Global Economic Governance Seminar Series (worth 1.5 ECTS) is mandatory, either in the Fall or Spring Semester.
