Philipp Aerni's illustrates in his presentation the importance of technological change in sustainable agriculture from a historical perspective. He argues that technology and international trade in agriculture ultimately helped the farming population to empower itself from natural and political subjugation. It also contributed to the abolishment of slavery plantations in European colonies and the United States.
