Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
I cannot decide whether to take the MILE or the TRAIL+ program. How do the two differ?
The MILE has been the WTI’s flagship program since 1999, tapping into the expertise of the world’s leading academics and practitioners in the field of international economic governance. This uniquely multidisciplinary program includes law courses as well as courses in economics and political science. Upon completion of the program, the student is awarded a Master of International Law and Economics (MILE) degree, which is equivalent to a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS).
The TRAIL+ program was launched in 2018 and is an advanced program that combines an LL.M. in Trade and Investment Law with a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) in international law and economics. It is specifically designed for legal professionals and law graduates looking to deepen their expertise in global trade, investment, and regulatory frameworks. Compared to the MILE, it includes more law courses and fewer courses on economics and political science
If you do not hold a law degree, the MILE program is the best fit for you.
Can I do a PhD at a Swiss university after completing the MILE or the TRAIL+ Program?
In Switzerland, most universities, including the University of Bern, require a two-year master's degree for admission to a PhD program. The MILE and TRAIL + are both Master of Advanced Studies programs. They are not sufficient as a stand-alone basis for admission to a PhD programme at the University of Bern. However, you may be eligible for admission to a PhD programme at the University of Bern based on our other degrees previously obtained. Please get in touch with us if you have any questions.
Whether the MILE or the TRAIL+ may be used as a basis for doctoral studies in other countries will depend on the regulations in those countries.
Is the application process the same for the MILE and for the TRAIL+?
The application process is the same, but the admission requirements are different. Therefore, please refer to the 'Admission' section of the website for information on how to apply for each program.
I am currently employed and want to take the MILE or the TRAIL+ program on a part-time basis. Is this possible?
The TRAIL+ and MILE program can be taken part-time over a two- to three-years period. If this is of interest, please indicate this in the application form. Upon admission to the program of your choice and in consultation with the WTI Director of Studies, a tailor-made study plan on a part-time basis will be designed for you.
Will my application be considered if I missed the regular deadline?
Late applications may be considered if space permits, on a rolling basis. Please be aware of visa requirements and the relevant visa application deadlines for your nationality. We encourage applicants to submit their materials as early as possible to ensure a smooth enrolment process.
Can I pay the tuition fee for the MILE/TRAIL+ program in instalments?
Tuition for the MILE or TRAIL+ program can be paid in full or in instalments. A 2% discount is applied when the full tuition is paid upfront. Alternatively, tuition may be paid in three instalments under a payment plan agreement. The first instalment is due two months prior to the program starts date.
Are there any scholarships available?
The Global Impact Association (GIA) provides scholarships for students that count towards the MILE & TRAIL+ programs. Information about GIA scholarships can be found at: https://www.global-impact-association.org/
We also encourage students to explore potential external funding sources such as government scholarships, international organizations, or foundations that support higher education.
