WTI awards winners of the African Regional Round, WTO Moot court Competition

All the teams that participated in the competition were impressive, in fact so impressive, I have no doubt the future of African trade is in great hands!

The student team from Kenya wins the African Round of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition. They receive a scholarship to attend the WTI's Winter or Summer Academy.

From the 8th to the 12th of March 2023, the African Round of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition took place at UPSA Law School (Accra, Ghana) and at the African Continental Free Trade Area secretariat.

14 teams from 7 African Universities (Kenya, Ghana, Lesotho, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia and Uganda) competed on a simulation of the WTO dispute settlement system.

The winners - Amelia, Glory and Miriti from the University of Kenyatta, Kenya - received the WTI Prize: a full tuition fee waiver to attend one of the WTI Winter or Summer Academies in 2023/2024.

Modesta Adjoa Nsowaa-Adu, WTI alumna (TRAIL+ 5), was part of the Jury and presented the WTI award, alongside the Second lady of the Republic of Ghana (Her Excellency Samira Bawumia).

"As a Panelist, it was an amazing experience testing the participants knowledge and understanding of the case,  WTO rules and procedures, public international law and their ability to critically apply them. All the teams that participated in the competition were impressive, in fact so impressive, I have no doubt the future of African trade is in great hands!"

Modesta also attended the Sponsors Fair with the representative from ECOWAS, Prof Maleku Desta, the coordinator for the African Trade Policy centre, UNECA, Dr Francisca Kusi Appiah, the Head of the Public Law Department at UPSA and Getrude Armah, lecturer at UPSA.
