Professor Mira Burri

Mira Burri is Professor of International Economic and Internet Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lucerne, Switzerland. She is the principal investigator of the ERC project "Trade Law 4.0: Trade Law for the Data-Driven Economy" (2021-2026). In Lucerne, Mira teaches International Law of Contemporary Media, Digital Copyright, Internet Law, International Intellectual Property Law and International Trade Law. She also teaches at the University of Göttingen as part of their LIPIT programme. At the World Trade Institute, Mira teaches the Digital Trade Law course in the spring semester.
Prior to joining the University of Lucerne, Mira Burri was a senior fellow at the World Trade Institute at the University of Bern, where she led a number of projects on digital technologies and trade governance as part of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR): Trade Regulation. As of 2022 Mira is also as a member of the National Research Council of the SNSF.
Mira’s research interests are in the fields of digital trade law and data governance and she has published in a number of peer-reviewed outlets on these topics. Mira is the author of the books EC Electronic Communications and Competition Law (Cameron May 2007); The Classification of Services in the Digital Economy (Springer 2012); Public Service Broadcasting 3.0 (Routledge 2015) and Intellectual Property in an Integrated Economy (Aspen, 2024). She is the editor of the book Big Data and Global Trade Law (Cambridge University Press 2021), as well as the co-editor of the publications Free Trade versus Cultural Diversity (Schulthess 2004); Digital Rights Management: The End of Collecting Societies? (Stämpfli et al. 2005); Intellectual Property and Traditional Cultural Expressions in a Digital Environment (Edward Elgar 2008); Governance of Digital Game Environments and Cultural Diversity (Edward Elgar 2010); Trade Governance in the Digital Age (Cambridge University Press 2012) and the Cambridge Handbook on Digital Trade Law (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming 2026).
Mira Burri consults, amongst others, the WTO, SECO, EFTA, ASEAN and the WEF on regulatory issues, in particular with regard to the governance of the data-driven economy.
