MILE Alumni share their Experiences with WTI-CWS Joint Academy Students

The uniqueness of the Masters class was, often having both the economist and the lawyer together in the same class explaining to us the two facets of International Trade Regulations, fundamentally an Economic Law.

Dr Santanu Mukherjee (MILE 1)

As part of the WTI-CWS Joint Academy on Trade Law and Policy, two MILE alumni shared their experiences as former WTI students with the participants of the Academy. The Joint Academy is organised by the WTI in cooperation with its longstanding partner, the Centre for WTO Studies of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade.

Dr Santanu Mukherjee, a MILE 1 alumnus who also completed his PhD under Prof. Em. Thomas Cottier at the WTI, and Ms Jhanvi Trivedi, a MILE 20 alumna, both agreed that the different perspectives WTI Master students receive are very valuable. Dr Mukherjee explained: “The uniqueness of the Masters class was, often having both the economist and the lawyer together in the same class explaining to us the two facets of International Trade Regulations, fundamentally an Economic Law.”

Jhanvi Trivedi, who is currently an intern at the World Trade Organization, also highlighted the attention students get by professors and lecturers at the institute: “At the WTI we have a special bond with our professors, or like how we say it here is that ‘they are our mentors for life’". She also emphasised that the WTI's Mentorship Programme is “one of the most prodigious things the WTI offers to the students”. The WTI is very proud of its alumni, their individual achievements and the support they are giving to current students in programmes such as the mentorship project, where alumni guide current students.

More than twenty students have participated in this year’s Joint Academy. Several WTI faculty members have taught the students conjointly with faculty members from various Indian institutions on topics related to international trade law and policy.
